Ζευγάρι στη δουλειά και τη ζωή, η Νατάσσα Λιανού και ο Ερμής Χαλβατζής σπουδασαν στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας. Το 2009 συνεχισαν τις σπουδες τους στο Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) του Λονδίνου όπου, μεταξύ άλλων, είχαν για καθηγητή τον Patrik Schumacher (partner της Ζaha Hadid). Μετά την αποφοίτησή τους εργαστηκαν στην Νέα Υόρκη για το Vito Acconci Studio. Ωστόσο ένα μήνυμα στο κινητό από τον Patrik έμελλε να τους αλλάξει τη ζωή, καθώς τους καλούσε να εργασθούν στο γραφείο της Zaha Hadid! Έτσι επέστρεψαν στο Λονδίνο και το όνειρο έγινε πραγματικότητα. Το 2015 και μετά από σημαντική και συμπυκνωμένη εμπειρία πολλαπλών έργων αλλά Της Εύης Καλλίνη και εμπειριών ξεκινησαν το δικό τους γραφείο στο Λονδίνο.

Μιλήστε μας λίγο για το London Iconic Pavilon, το πιο πρόσφατο έργο σας που παρουσιάσατε στον εκθεσιακό χώρο ExCel στο Λονδίνο.
Το London Iconic Pavilion αφορά τον σχεδιασμό ενός νέου τύπου εκθεσιακού περιπτέρου, εισάγοντας μοναδικές αρχιτεκτονικές ποιότητες, ενώ όλη η ιδέα βασίζεται στην έννοια της απλής και γρήγορης συναρμολόγησης με ελαφριά υλικά και έξυπνη χρήση αυτών. Σχεδιάστηκε για την Intralot, με σκοπό να συνοδεύει και να προβάλλει τα προϊόντα της εταιρείας τους, στις μεγαλύτερες εκθέσεις του κόσμου. Ξεκίνησε το ταξίδι του τον Φεβρουάριο του 2016 από το Λονδίνο και το ξανασχεδιάσαμε για να παρουσιαστεί σε εκθέσεις στην Ατλάντα και την Σιγκαπούρη.
Ποιες είναι οι εντυπώσεις σας από την Zaha Hadid και ποιο είναι το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα που μάθατε μαθητεύοντας στο πλευρό της
Ένα από το πιο σημαντικά πράγματα που μάθαμε είναι, ότι τα πάντα είναι δυνατά. Είναι πολύ δύσκολο όταν είσαι μέσα σε ένα τέτοιο γραφείο με τόσο έντονο χαρακτήρα, να μην αφομοιωθείς. Αυτό που πάντα κάναμε είναι να κρατάμε μια κριτική στάση απέναντι σε όλα. Αυτό μας έδωσε την δυνατότητα να μπορούμε να βάζουμε νέα πράγματα στο τραπέζι, κάτι το οποίο η Zaha εκτιμούσε. Η εμπειρία από περισσότερα 30 διεθνή έργα, μας βοήθησε να ανακαλύψουμε πολλές και διαφορετικές πτυχές του επαγγέλματός μας και έτσι να δημιουργήσουμε το δικό μας λεξιλόγιο, ώστε να διαγράψουμε πλέον την δική μας πορεία.
Με το ZahaTeam συμμετείχατε στο project για το σχεδιασμό του αεροδρομίου του Πεκίνου, που θα λειτουργήσει το 2018. Ποια είναι η δική σας συμβολή;
Είμασταν από την αρχή του project, στην σύλληψη της ιδέας και συμμετείχαμε σε όλες της φάσεις του design. Έχουμε σχεδιάσει όλα τα στοιχεία που συγκροτούν ένα αεροδρόμιο , την οροφή, τα εσωτερικά, το passenger flow, το airport city, το retail και F&B strategy, τον πύργο ελέγχου και τα jet bridges που συνδέουν το terminal με τα αεροσκάφη. Είναι ένα από τα πιο απαιτητικά έργα που είχαμε την τύχη να το δουλέψουμε πολύ εντατικά και να αποκομίσουμε σπάνια εμπειρία. Έχουμε δουλέψει συνολικά 4 αεροδρόμια
«Η εικόνα των πόλεων αντικατοπτρίζει την οικονομία της και vice versa, επομένως, πρέπει να επενδύσουμε στην καλή αρχιτεκτονική γιατί έτσι επενδύουμε στους ανθρώπους που την κατοικούν, στην καλή επικοινωνία άρα και στην οικονομία»
Ορίζετε τη φιλοσοφία σας ως «smart design elegance» (ευφυής σχεδιαστική κομψότητα). Τι ακριβώς εννοείτε;
Η φιλοσοφία μας αφορά σε έναν ευφυή σχεδιασμό, μια ευφυή κομψότητα, η οποία είναι αποτέλεσμα ψηφιακής σχεδιαστικής διαδικασίας και συνδυάζει λειτουργικότητα, αειφορία, οικονομία, μηχανική, υλικότητα και οικονομία. Η αρμονική ισορροπία μεταξύ όλων αυτών, παράγει την προστιθέμενη αξία της υψηλής αισθητικής. Η αναζήτηση της ομορφιάς, της λειτουργικότητας σε συνδυασμό με την οικονομία σε όλα τα επίπεδα, αποτελεί την βάση της φιλοσοφίας μας.
Τι θέλετε να πετύχετε με την αρχιτεκτονική σας; Ποιο είναι το όραμά σας;
Πιστεύουμε ότι ο σχεδιασμός και η υψηλή αισθητική αποτελούν προϊόντα λογικής και οργάνωσης. Όραμα μας είναι να δημιουργούμε χώρους που εμπνέουν και επαυξάνουν τις αισθήσεις, που μεταφέρουν μέρος της ενέργειάς μας, συνδέουν και δημιουργούν εμπειρίες.
Ποιες αρχιτεκτονικές παρεμβάσεις θα κάνατε στην Αθήνα, αν σας δινόταν η ευκαιρία;
Σε πρώτο επίπεδο θα προτείναμε μικρές και οικονομικές παρεμβάσεις σε επίπεδο γειτονιάς που θα αναβάθμιζαν άμεσα την καθημερινότητα των κατοίκων. Σε δεύτερο επίπεδο θα προτείναμε την συνδεσιμότητα και δημιουργία διεθνών συγκοινωνιακών hubs, για σιδηρόδρομους και λεωφορεία, όπου θα συνέδεαν το κέντρο της πόλης με το αεροδρόμιο και τα λιμάνια. Η συνδεσιμότητα αποτελεί κύριο χαρακτηριστικό πρωτοπόρων και ανεπτυγμένων πόλεων που συμβάλει στην ανάπτυξη νέων δρόμων επικοινωνίας τόσο τουριστικά όσο και εμπορικά, αναβαθμίζοντας την Αθήνα σε έναν αξιόλογο πόλο για την ευρύτερη περιοχή της ανατολικής Μεσογείου.
Natasha Lianou and Hermes Halvatzis, known as LC Architects, are two talented, young, Greek architects who have already left their mark internationally
Α couple both at work and in life, Natasha Lianou and Hermes Halvatzis studied at the university of Thessaly. In 2009 they continued their studies at the Architectural Assossiation School of Architecture (AA) in London, where they had Patrik Schumacher (Zaha’s partner) among others as a teacher. After their graduation they worked in New York at Vito Acconci Studio. However, a text message to their mobile from Patrik was meant to change their life, as he was inviting them to work at Zaha Hadid’s office. In 2015 and after aquiring invaluable experience in numerous projects, they staredt their own business in London.

Can you please tell us about the London Iconic Pavilion, the most recent project you presented at the showcase ExCel in London?
London Iconic Pavilion has to do with the design of a new kind of exhibition stand, introducing unique architectural qualities, while the whole idea is based on the concept of a simple and quick assemblage using light materials in a smart way. It was designed for Intralot, in order to accompany and promote the products of their company in the biggest fairs of the world. This project “starts its journey” in February 2016 in London and now it has been redesigned so that it will be used in fairs in Atlanta and Singapore 2016.
What impression did she make on you and what is the most important thing you learnt during your internship at her office?
One of the most useful things we learnt is that everything is possible through hard work, diligence, patience and co-operation. One cannot really avoid getting integrated when working in such a demanding working environment and with such influential people. What we made sure was being critical about everything. This way we could always put forward new ideas, something which Zaha really appreciated. The experience we got through our work on thirty international projects helped us discover various aspects of our profession, enabling us to create our own way of communication and thus consolidating our own career.
Together with Zaha Team you participated in the project of the design of Beijing airport which is due to start operating in 2018. Which stage is the project now at and what is your contribution?
We contributed both to the concept and all the stages during the implementation of the idea. We have redesigned all the parts which constitute an airport such as the ceiling, interior areas, passenger flow, the airport city, retail and F+B strategy as well as the control tower and the jet bridges which connect the terminal with the aircrafts. It is one of the most challenging projects we were lucky enough to work on intensively and gain valuable experience. We have worked on four airports altogether.

You define your philosophy as “smart design elegance”. What exactly do you mean?
Our philosophy is clever design and smart elegance which is the result of digital designing combining functionality, sustainability, engineering, materiality and economy. A delicate balance of all these qualities is conducive to the added value of high aesthetics. The quest of beauty and functionality in combination with economy at all levels is the basis of our philosophy.
What do you want to accomplish with your architecture? What is your vision?
We believe that design and high aesthetics are the result of logic and organisation. It is our vision to develop spaces which inspire and accentuate senses while transferring part of our energy to stimulate experiences and make people more creative.
Which architectural interventions would you apply in Athens if you were given the chance?
We think that Athens needs interventions at many levels. To start with, we would suggest small scale and low budget interventions at neighborhood level, which would upgrade people’s daily life directly, while we would also suggest the construction and connection of international transportation hubs for buses and trains, which would connect the city centre with the airport and the ports. Connectability is a major feature of developed countries as it contributes not only to upgrading everyday life but also to the development of new channels of communication both in tourism and commerce, turning Athens into an attractive hub for the wider area of East Europe.
