Ποιο θεωρείτε ότι είναι το εικαστικό προφίλ της Θεσσαλονίκης;
«Αν συγκρίνει κανείς τη Θεσσαλονίκη με αντίστοιχου μεγέθους πόλεις της Ευρώπης και όχι μόνο, θα παρατηρήσει ότι δεν έχει απαλλαγεί από τα χαρακτηριστικά μιας επαρχιακής πόλης. Θα διαπιστώσει ότι δεν υπάρχουν συλλέκτες και σύγχρονη αρχιτεκτονική αλλά ένας υπερβολικός αριθμός καφέ-μπαρ».
Υπήρξε εικαστικό παρελθόν;Υπάρχει εικαστικό παρόν; Θα υπάρξει εικαστικό μέλλον;
«Τα ιστορικά μνημεία της πόλης υπογράφουν το εικαστικό της παρελθόν. Γενικά, δεν είμαι απαισιόδοξο άτομο και δεν μου αρέσει να γκρινιάζω. Επομένως, βλέπω εικαστικό παρόν και μέλλον. Άλλωστε, είναι πολλοί οι καλλιτέχνες οι οποίοι σπού-δασαν στη Θεσσαλονίκη και στο εξωτερικό αλλά επέστρεψαν εδώ συνειδητά για να συνεχίσουν το έργο τους».
Το Μητροπολιτικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης, η ίδρυση του οποίου ανακοινώθηκε πρόσφατα, θα δημιουργήσει νέες προ-οπτικές;
«Βεβαίως, με την προûπόθεση ότι θα αποκτήσει άμεση σχέση με τον ρυθμό της πόλης. Επίσης, η πρόβλεψη ενός οικονομικού manager μπορεί να φέρει θετικά αποτελέσματα αυτοχρηματοδότησης με καινοτόμες ιδέες που θα συμβάλλουν στην αυτοσυντήρηση».
Ο εθελοντισμός μπορεί να προσφέρει στην αισθητική αναβάθμιση της πόλης;
«Θεωρώ ότι κάτι τέτοιο είναι εφικτό. Φάνηκε, άλλωστε, και από τα αποτελέσματα της Art-Thessaloniki International Contemporary Art Fair. Ένας θεσμός που πρέπει να επεκταθεί και σε άλλες δράσεις μέσα στην πόλη, γιατί οι πολίτες πραγμα τικά επιθυμούν την εξέλιξη της αλλά δεν βρίσκουν τρόπους να το δείξουν εμπράκτως».
Η ART-ΤHESSALONIKI μπορεί να συσπειρώσει δημιουργικές δυνάμεις;
«Η στήριξη του θεσμού της Art-Thessaloniki International Contemporary Art Fair, από τα στελέχη της HELEXPO, έβαλε τη Θεσσαλονίκη στον παγκόσμιο χάρτη των μεγάλων διεθνών συναντήσεων. Ως εμπνευστής και art director έζησα αρχικά την αμφιβολία αλλά τώρα που το εγχείρημα πέτυχε βλέπω την δικαίωση αυτής της ιδέας. Θεωρώ ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό και το γεγονός ότι βασίστηκε στην αυτοχρηματοδότηση».

Οι επιλογές των εκθέσεων που πραγματοποιούν οι θεσμοθετημένοι φορείς είναι και αισθητικές προτάσεις που εκπαιδεύουν τους θεατές αλλά και προκαλούν δημιουργικές ωσμώσεις απόψεων με ορατά αποτελέσματα
Η Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών Θεσσαλονίκης δικαίωσε αντίστοιχα τις αρχικές προσδοκίες λειτουργίας της;
«Πράγματι η Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών έδωσε μια ώθηση και ήδη οι απόφοιτοί της είναι ικανοί δημιουργοί και θερμοί υποστηριχτές της πολιτιστικής αναβάθμισης της πόλης. Η παρουσία τους είναι αισθητή και ελπίζω ότι στο μέλλον θα γίνει και ακόμη πιο ενεργή».
Οι δραστηριοποιημένοι επαγγελματίες για την Τέχνη γενικά έχουν ποσοστό ευθύνης στην αισθητική βελτίωση των πολιτών;
«Σαφώς και έχουν. Αρκεί κανείς να αναλογιστεί το γεγονός ότι οι επιλογές τους για τις εκθέσεις είναι και αισθητικές προτάσεις που εκπαιδεύουν τους θεατές αλλά και προκαλούν δημιουργικές ωσμώσεις απόψεων με ορατά αποτελέσματα. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι οι θεσμοθετημένοι φορείς θα έπρεπε να είναι περισσότερο ενεργοί και ουσιαστικοί αλλά η γραφειοκρατία που χειρίζονται δημιουργεί σημαντικές και ανυπέρβλητες δυ- σκολίες παρά τις συνήθως σωστές απόψεις που υπηρετούν».

The Art Thessaloniki International Contemporary Art Fair will be take place on November 23, 2017 for the second consecutive year. Stellios Skoulos, Architect - Visual Arist, talks with the organizer, Pantelis Tsatsis, about the future of visual arts in the city
Dear Pantelis what do you think Thessaloniki’s visual art profile is?
When we compare Thessaloniki with cities of similar size in Europe and not only, we observe that they have not managed to break away from the characteristics of a provincial city without collectors, without modern architecture but with an excessive number of coffee bars.
Was there a past for visual arts? Is there a present? Will there be a future?
The historical monuments of the city are the signature of her artistic past. Generally, I’m not a pessimistic person and I do not have the talent for grumbling. So, I see a present and a future for visual arts. It is the success of the international “Art-Thessaloniki International Contemporary Art Fair”. Also, a number of artists have studied in Thessaloniki and abroad and they have chosen to return and continue their work.
The Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art, whose foundation was recently announced, will it create new prospects?
Yes only if will change their mindset to go out in the city. Adding an economic manager can bring positive self-financing results with innovative ideas that will help in self-preservation.
Does volunteer work contribute to the aesthetic upgrading of the city and how?
Do the statutory structures serve such an approach? I believe that yes, and as was shown by the results of the Art-Thessaloniki International Contemporary Art Fair, this institution must be extended to other actions within the city, because the citizens really want the best for the city, but there are no ways to show it .
ART-THESSALONIKI has brought together creative forces, how important is the institution that has begun so dynamically locally and not only?
The support of Art-Thessaloniki International Contemporary Art Fair, by HELEXPO executives, has placed Thessaloniki on the world map of major international meetings. As an inspirer and art director I had some doubts but now that the project has succeeded I see the vindication of this idea. I find it very important that it was self-financed.
Has the School of Fine Arts of Thessaloniki, which has been in operation for some years, justified the expectations? Does it function as a city tool?Does it shape opinions and prejudice a positive future?
Indeed, the School of Fine Arts gave an impetus and already its graduates are capable creators and warm supporters of the cultural upgrading of the city. Their presence is noticeable and I hope that in the future it will become active as well.
Are Art Professionals who are active in general responsible for the aesthetic improvement of citizens?
Are institutionalized bodies actually involved in this direction? Obviously, because the choices of the exhibitions they make are also aesthetic suggestions that educate viewers and also cause creative fusions of views with visible results. Institutionalized bodies should be more active and more effective, but the bureaucracy they dealing with, creates significant and insurmountable difficulties despite the correct opinions they may have.
